Ultimate Armstrong, BC Travel Guide: Best Food, Festivals & Things to Do in the North Okanagan
Looking for the best food experiences and things to do in Armstrong BC?
Skip the city crowds and take the scenic route to Armstrong, a hidden gem in the North Okanagan where farmland meets flavour. From heritage cheese and cider barns to flower fields and quilt trails, this small town packs a lot of charm (and taste) into one day trip.
Armstrong: Shuswap or North Okanagan?
Armstrong is officially part of the North Okanagan region of British Columbia, located between Vernon and Enderby. It falls within the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO), but it’s also right on the border of the Shuswap region, which starts just a few minutes north toward Salmon Arm.
So while Armstrong shares the rolling farmland and orchard-covered hills that define the Okanagan Valley, it also blends into the Shuswap’s rural charm — an area known for its lakes, campgrounds, and forested landscapes.
In short:
North Okanagan → vineyards, orchards, cideries, and farm-to-table food culture (Vernon, Armstrong, Coldstream).
Shuswap → lake life, houseboats, hiking, and family-friendly recreation (Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Blind Bay).
Armstrong sits at the crossroads of both — making it the perfect day trip if you’re exploring either region.
Start Your Day at Wild Oak Café
Kick off your Armstrong, BC food tour at Wild Oak Café, a Mennonite-owned spot beloved by locals for its warm hospitality and from-scratch menu. Order their seasonal lattes paired with a buttery bacon-cheese scone (the cuts are bacon are thick!). Healthy servings of waffles with creative seasonal toppings are also hugely popular with regulars.
As you see in the video, sit next to the window where you can see the handprints of the previous owners from days long gone – very nostalgic and sweet. The café’s cozy farmhouse feel makes it the perfect first stop before exploring Armstrong’s countryside.

Visit the Village Cheese Co — Armstrong Cheese & Dairy Heritage
One of the top places to visit in Armstrong, BC is visit The Village Cheese Co., where Canada’s cheese-making history comes alive. Armstrong’s dairy roots date back to the early 1900s when local farmers created the famous Armstrong Cheese brand.
Today, Village Cheese carries on that legacy with small-batch cheddars, squeaky cheese and goudas made right on site. Visitors can watch cheesemakers at work through the viewing window and sample fresh, squeaky cheese curds — a true taste of North Okanagan food culture. If you want to ensure you get to see the cheese makers in action try to visit on Tuesdays as I was informed while onsite.

Flower Festivals: Tulips in Spring & Sunflowers in Summer
If you love colourful backdrops and fresh air, time your Armstrong trip with one of the town’s flower festivals.
- Armstrong Tulip Festival (April–May): Acres of tulips bloom in neat, colourful rows across the rolling farmland — perfect for photos and family visits.
- Armstrong Sunflower Festival (August–September): By late summer, the fields turn gold as giant sunflowers stretch toward the Okanagan sky. Food trucks, local vendors, and live music add to the festival atmosphere.
Both events are local favourites and among the most Instagram-worthy things to do in Armstrong BC.

The Armstrong Quilt Trail: Art Meets Agriculture
One of the most unique things to do in Armstrong, BC is to follow the Armstrong Barn Quilt Trail — a colourful outdoor art gallery that celebrates both farming and creativity across the North Okanagan.
Barn quilts are large, hand-painted wooden squares inspired by traditional fabric quilt patterns. The idea started in Ohio in 2001, when a farmer painted a single quilt block on her family’s barn. The concept spread quickly across rural North America, turning barns and outbuildings into community art pieces.
By the late 2000s, the movement reached Canada, starting in Ontario and later taking root in British Columbia. Today, there are over 7,000 barn quilts across Canada and the United States, displayed on farms, homesteads, and heritage buildings.
Here in the Armstrong-Spallumcheen area, the local barn quilt trail began in 2016 with just a handful of pieces — and has since grown to more than 50 quilts scattered throughout the countryside. Each one tells its own story, reflecting a family’s farming history, local symbols, or favourite quilt patterns passed down through generations.
As you drive through Armstrong and the surrounding valley, you’ll spot these bright designs on barns, fences, and storefronts. It’s like a treasure hunt through rural art history — and a perfect pairing with the area’s cideries, cheese shops, and farm stands.
Tip for visitors:
Pick up a free map from the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce or download the North Okanagan–Shuswap Barn Quilt Trail map before you go. You can easily make a half-day itinerary combining the trail with other local favourites like Farmstrong Cider Company and Village Cheese Co. Armstrong.

Shop Small at Fieldnotes Market
Downtown Armstrong offers a few delightful surprises, including Field Notes, a boutique filled with locally made candles, sweet treats, and unique gifts. Don’t miss their wax-seal station — it’s one of the most extensive collections in BC. This shop embodies the creativity and craftsmanship that make North Okanagan travel so special.
Sip and Snack at Farmstrong Cider Company
Just outside of town, Farmstrong Cider Company is one of the best Armstrong BC food and drink stops. The cidery is housed in a beautifully restored 1890s barn surrounded by orchards and mountain views.
Try a cider flight made from apples grown on site and pair it with their baked brie topped with candied pecans and local apple slices. It’s a true farm-to-glass experience — and one of the most relaxing things to do near Armstrong BC.
Dine Beside the Tracks at The Clove
A viewer recommendation led us to The Clove, a cozy restaurant set right beside the train tracks. It’s small-town dining at its best: think crispy fried chicken burgers, mac and cheese, and their famous Georgie Porgie Pumpkin Pie.
When a train rolls past mid-bite, it’s pure Armstrong magic. If you’re planning an Armstrong BC food itinerary, this one deserves a top spot.
Experience the IPE Fair (Interior Provincial Exhibition)
The Labour Day September long weekend is when Armstrong hosts the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) — one of Canada’s largest agricultural fairs. It’s part rodeo, part food festival, part carnival, and a cornerstone of North Okanagan events. Expect livestock shows, midway rides, and plenty of fair food from local BC vendors — from smoky BBQ and tacos to classic mini donuts.
Armstrong may be small, but its heart (and flavour) are huge. Between flower festivals, heritage cheese, cider barns, and quilt trails, this North Okanagan town proves that small-town travel can be just as delicious and dynamic as any big-city getaway.
