Canada’s Christmas Train is a Must See Historical Gem
If you are searching for Canada’s Christmas train that actually feels magical, the Summerland Christmas Train should be at the top of your list. Last year we rode it as a family, and it instantly became one of our best BC holiday experiences. It has everything you want from a festive outing: lights, music, nostalgia, and moments that stay with your kids long after the ride ends.
How much is it?
This train is a hot ticket and for any Summerland Steam Train event you should consider booking as far in advance as they allow.
The holiday train experience in Summerland during the 2025 season prices are as follows:
Child (3-12) – $25
Youth – $30
Senior – $33.50
Adult – $35.50

What makes the ride special
The train leaves the Summerland station at dusk, and once it gets moving the interior lights dim. That small detail makes a huge difference. You can see the town glowing in Christmas lights, vineyards wrapped in colour, and hillside homes decorated from rooftop to driveway.

For the best views, sit on the left side of the train. The right side is the mountain wall, so you will miss most of the lights if you sit there but we were fortunate enough to have a kind group offer to swap us seats so that we could experience the outdoor lights on the return ride.
As you anxiously await Santa’s visit to your car you can enjoy live musicians playing carols, which gives the ride a classic feel. No big production, just real holiday spirit.
The magic moment: Santa and Mrs. Claus
=The highlight for our family was when Santa and Mrs. Claus walked through each car. They stop at every seat with no rush. Mrs. Claus hands out cookie filled goodie bags, and Santa chats with each child.
My kids could not believe Santa was actually standing in front of them on a moving train. Between the soft music and the glow from the windows, it felt like a scene you only see in movies. That moment alone made it one of the best Christmas train experiences we have ever had.
What to know before you go
If you want to make this part of your holiday plans, here are the essentials:
- Tickets sell out early, usually by September or October.
- The full trip is 90 minutes, from the station to the bridge and back.
- Great for all ages, especially young kids.
- Not ideal for guests with mobility challenges. It is a historic steam train with narrow walkways and no onboard bathrooms.
- Dress warmly. Even inside, you will want layers.

Where to stay in Summerland
If you plan to make a getaway out of it, the Summerland Resort & Spa is a solid choice – full room tour is in the video! It is family friendly, with kitchens, fireplaces, and spacious rooms with balconies. After the train ride, it is exactly the kind of place where you can relax and stay cozy.

Why this train stands out
There are many festive attractions across Canada, but the Summerland Christmas Train hits a sweet spot that few others do. It blends small town charm, real holiday warmth, and the simple magic of lights and music drifting through the valley.
For families looking for Canada’s Christmas train that delivers heart over hype, this is it. Book early, choose the left side, and enjoy one of the best BC holiday experiences of the season.
