Canada’s Best Kept Secret: The Grand Sommelier Express In BC

· · · ·

Don’t sleep on Canada’s wine train! A historic train where sommeliers pour local wines as you glide through vineyard views, mountain ranges, and shimmering Okanagan Valley lake scenes. It’s called the Grand Sommelier Express, and it just might be Canada’s best kept food and wine secret.

Hosted at the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway each June in Summerland, British Columbia, this magical one-day event has grown in popularity every year. And for 2025, there’s exciting news: the Grand Sommelier Express is expanding to two full days! Twice the opportunity to experience one of the most unique wine adventures in Canada.

What Is the Grand Sommelier Express – Canada’s wine train

Set in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, the Grand Sommelier Express is the only experience of its kind in the country. It brings together wineries, cideries, distilleries, and breweries along the Bottleneck Drive Wine Route, hosted aboard the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway.

Here’s how it works: guests begin with a welcome reception at the station, then board the vintage steam train for a 90-minute scenic ride, sipping and swirling local beverages along the way. Think vineyard-covered hills, Giant’s Head Mountain, and stunning views of Okanagan Lake, all while riding a piece of history.

And yes, there is wine onboard, it wouldn’t be Canada’s wine train without it!

What’s New for Canada’s Wine Train in 2025

The biggest update for 2025? The event now runs across two days in June, offering even more flexibility and time to enjoy the food, wine and train for those who’ve had it on their bucket list. There are also shoulder events and dinners at local Bottleneck Drive wineries. Another huge change? Assigned seating, which means you can lock in your spot without the pre-boarding hustle. In my previous visits, it was really whomever could reach an outdoor seat the fastest won which led to many being disappointed. Not that the interior seats aren’t comfortable but there’s just something to be said for the open air cabooses, the wind in your hair and panoramic views!

So, if you can, aim for the open-air cabooses. These exterior cars give you the best panoramic views and breezy vibes—though if it rains, it’s a bit of a gamble. Still, many agree it’s a chance worth taking.

Other Kettle Valley Steam Railway rides for non-wine drinkers or kids!

Once I got a taste of the Kettle Valley Steam Railway I had to return for not one but two other events with my kids. Other than the regular historic tours offered on select days there are additional year round events.

Christmas Express: Watch the video to see what to expect. Over select dates on November and December you can book a ride on the Christmas Express where you’ll be treated to a meet with Santa and Mrs Clause, a mini gift bag, live music and Christmas lights from your train window. It was such a great time, but do yourself a favour and sing the carols or the elf will come for you!

Great Train Robbery & BBQ: My son loved the Great Train Robbery where there were bandits riding horses and a sherriff who gave lucky children a sheriff’s badge. It was a little rainy during our visit, and we sat in the outdoor caboose but it hardly bothered us. Just be sure to check your weather forecast and bring layers.

Mother’s Day Train: On Mother’s Day weekend you can grab a spot on the train where they give each mom a flower and a cup of tea as well as a ride along the historic Kettle Valley Railway.
