Kelowna’s Best Sandwiches: Which is worth your lunch hour

· · ·

Kelowna may be known for its vineyards and lake views, but let’s talk about the unsung heroes of its culinary scene: sandwiches. Not just any sandwiches—these are the kind that locals swear by, the ones that have earned cult status, and the ones that make our viewers argue in the comments for their local favourite.

I spent my work week chasing down Kelowna’s most iconic sandwiches, and let me tell you, it was a delicious rollercoaster of crispy edges, tangy sauces, and unexpected flavour bombs! In the video below I break each sandwich stop down by wait time, presentation, taste and even weight! As much as I love each of these sandwich shops, this video made one of my all time favourites unfollowed me…just for being real. But I still recommend their sandwiches!

Rocket Subs in Kelowna - Best sandwich in Kelowna

Rocket Subs

From selling subs in a back alley to their brick and mortar location in Kelowna’s more industrial neighbourhood, Rocket Subs made its way into cult status before their grand opening even happened. It being a favourite, I wanted to kick off Monday right. I arrived on a mid July lunch hour to a wait that had already began before Rocket Subs even opened its doors.

What to order & Cost at Rocket Subs

You really can’t go wrong with any sub you order but the Morty ($14 + tax) is by far the most photographed on social media. I prefer the Morty 2.0 with pistachios. But no matter which sandwich you get, be sure to order a mini chocolate pie ($4) or banana pudding ($4)! There are also these little overly sweet Chubby drinks served there. I find them awful but my son sure does love the blue flavour.

Pro tip: take your sub and head next door to the Railside Brewery – they allow food from their neighbourhood block!

Typical Wait Time at Rocket Subs

Rocket Subs opens daily at noon and operates until around 3 PM—or until they sell out. I’ve waited a wide range from 57 minutes to 10 minutes. Due to high demand:

  • No pre-orders or online ordering are currently available
  • Three subs max per person to keep the line moving
  • Expect a wait during peak lunch hour which is as soon as they open, but they do everything fresh

They’ve been known to sell out within a couple of hours, so showing up early is your best bet however, I did wait 57 minutes in doing so. 2 pm seems to be a good time but again, you just never know if they’ll sell out before hand.

Rules and things to know – Rocket Subs Has Rules

You might be surprised to discover that a place that breaks all the rules has a few rules that only regulars to Rocket Subs know.
1. Only 3 sandwiches per order. For my office, I needed to buy 4 sandwiches but ended up sharing with my son because of their rule.
2. Sometimes they have a sign that says “No filming”. In Kelowna, businesses pay good money to have word of mouth spread via social media. But I get it, sometimes you don’t always want to be on camera.
3. Don’t complain. Honestly, this video pissed them off and as a result my sister and I got an “Unfollow” on social even though we weren’t complaining… If you do complain on Google or in person, expect to see your name on their IG stories.
4. While in. the Rocket Subs line I heard a certain episode of Seinfeld referenced more than once by regulars – No sandwiches for you!
It isn’t as bad as that but also…I am telling you there are rules to know.

Rules

No more than 3 sandos per order.

Mediterranean Market Kelowna's best sandwiches
Mediterranean Market Kelowna's best sandwiches- budget eats kelowna

Mediterranean Market or “Med” Market

Definitely the OG of all Kelowna’s best sandwich shops, Mediterranean Market has perfected the art of the sub sandwich. This is more of a grab and go at this cozy little deli. You can find Italian and Mediterranean imports here and in the refrigerated section you can find numerous subs that are premade and ready to go. This is the best option if you need to feed a large office or work site. And trust me, everyone will be happy you brought them these sandwiches because they are beloved for those in the know.

You are also also to order a sandwich but there tends to be a line – it does go fast! Since it is a deli, you can select your choice of meat, cheese and veg so the combinations can be endless.

What to order & cost

I love to grab the $10 grab and go large sandwiches wrapped in plastic wrap. There are spicy subs and regular on white or whole wheat. It is by far the best deal in Kelowna when it comes to sandwiches.
While they offer a wide variety of pre-made and custom subs, the Spicy Italian is a fan favourite. It typically includes:

  • Spicy capicola or salami
  • Provolone or mozzarella
  • Lettuce, tomato, onion
  • House-made vinaigrette
  • Served on a fresh crusty roll

Customers can also build their own sub from scratch, choosing from a wide selection of meats and cheeses at the deli counter. The quality of ingredients is what sets these sandwiches apart—think gorgonzola, caramelized onion cheese, and chorizo salami.

Typical Wait time

For our office Mediterranean Market is THE spot to go for a quick grab and go…if there are sandwiches available!

  • Pre-made subs are available in the cooler—perfect for a quick grab-and-go.
  • Custom subs are made fresh at the deli counter. During peak lunch hours, especially around noon, the market can get busy.
  • Wait time for a made-to-order sub is usually 5–10 minutes, but it can stretch longer during the lunch rush.
  • Pro tip: Take a number at the deli counter and browse the aisles while you wait. You’ll probably leave with more than just a sandwich.

Rules and Things To Know

The rules aren’t as detailed as Rocket Subs. All you need to know at Mediterranean Market is that sandwiches are premade and sometimes it can be a race to get one. Sometimes you’ll be standing behind a person who is emptying ALL of the premade sandwiches for their office in which case you’ll have to stand in line. Grab a number and wait. I guarantee it won’t be 57 minutes!

Polene Bakery & Bistro

Polene (pronounced Pawleen) is the brick-and-mortar chapter of Alchemy Bread Company, dreamed up by Myroslav Pomazan. He moved to Canada from Ukraine about 15 years ago and, fun fact, he actually started out as a software developer. Like many of us during the pandemic, he turned to baking—but his love for traditional Eastern European bread was so strong that what started as a few loaves for neighbours snowballed into a full-on business.

What to order & cost

I love Polene’s chimichurri steak ($16) which is actually roast beef, provolone, crispy onions, pickled red onion, arugula, chimichurri sauce. Another favourite is the classic Italian ($15) ham, mozarella, tomato, cucumber, romaine, pickled red onion, housemade herb mayo, balsamic glaze.

You may notice that these prices are definitely a bit higher but if you watch our video you’ll see why – each sandwich at Polene is hefty weighing over approximately 20 ounces each. These sandwiches can feed me over the course of two lunch hours so it is worth it!

Typical Wait Time at Polene

Polene operates as both a bakery and bistro, so wait times can vary:

  • Grab-and-go items like croissants and pre-made sandwiches are quick
  • Made-to-order sandwiches may take 10–15 minutes during peak lunch hours
  • Online ordering and pickup are available on their website, which can help avoid the wait

The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, with a charming European atmosphere that makes the wait feel like part of the experience.

Polene is a perfect blend of heritage, hustle, and high-quality ingredients.

Rules & Things To Know

It is pretty straight forward at Polene. Your best bet to avoid a wait is ordering on their easy online system. Their menu has drastically changed since first ordering so online images may not be the best representation of their current offerings.

Woodfire Bakery

Woodfire Bakery is one of Kelowna’s most beloved lunch spots. Any self-respecting local would have this in their Kelowna’s best sandwiches list. This cozy, German-style café has been serving up hearty meals for decades and is the kind of place locals like to keep to themselves. Once you try one of their sandwiches, you’ll see why people keep coming back.

Woodfire Bakery has been a staple on Harvey Avenue for years. Known for consistent quality, big portions, and a comforting European-inspired menu, this family-run spot has earned a loyal following. For many Kelowna locals, it’s the go-to place when they want a satisfying, homemade-style lunch.

What to order & cost at Woodfire Bakery

Woodfire Bakery is one of the best places in Kelowna for hot sandwiches, hearty soups, and German comfort food. Their sandwiches are the main draw and have earned a loyal following over the years. The Chicken Cordon Bleu ($15.90) sub is a standout, layered with breaded chicken breast, ham, Swiss cheese, and a creamy sauce on a fresh Kaiser roll. The Reuben is another classic, piled high with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing on rye.

If you’re after something even more filling, the Torpedo sub ($15.90) delivers with a generous mix of meats and cheese toasted until melty and golden. Locals also love the Half & Half on a Kaiser, a comforting combination of velouté chicken and roast beef, and the Smoked Beef on a Kaiser, which brings smoky flavour and tender texture together in every bite.

While the sandwiches get most of the attention, Woodfire Bakery’s menu also celebrates German comfort food. Veal meatloaf, bratwurst with sauerkraut, and ham hock are hearty favourites, often paired with their rotating soups. From beef barley to mushroom to their Woodfire Bakery gumbo, the soups make the perfect companion to a sandwich or a warm-up meal on their own.

For anyone searching for the best sandwiches in Kelowna, Woodfire Bakery continues to deliver the kind of generous, homemade-style food that keeps people coming back.

Typical wait time

Woodfire Bakery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM, and you can count on it being busy at lunchtime. Ordering works cafeteria-style with a smooth, organized line, and wait times usually run anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the crowd. Even when the line stretches out the door, service is quick and the staff keeps things moving.

There are no reservations or online ordering here, so your best bet is to show up early if you want to skip the lunch rush. It’s a Kelowna classic through and through—simple, no frills, and all about the food. They really don’t make them like Woodfire Bakery anymore.

Rules and Things To Know

It’s pretty simple at Woodfire Bakery: follow the line, be ready when they ask you to order. Once you pay, keep your receipt as you’ll need it to get your sandwich. For full experience watch the video.

Fancy's cold cuts and cocktails - Kelowna's best sandwiches
Fancy's cold cuts and cocktails - Kelowna's best sandwiches

Fancy’s Cold Cuts & Cocktails

Fancy’s Cold Cuts & Cocktails is one of the newest and most exciting downtown Kelowna restaurants. It’s a modern European-style deli crossed with a cocktail bar, where sandwiches are treated like works of art and the vibe is effortlessly cool. If you’re searching for the best sandwiches in Kelowna, this spot deserves a place at the top of your list.

The concept comes from Mark Veriker, a hospitality veteran whose career started in gas stations, bingo halls, and pubs before evolving into a passion for food and service. His vision for Fancy’s was to create a space that feels both elevated and approachable, a place where industry folks and food lovers alike can relax over a killer sandwich and a handcrafted cocktail.

Since opening in June 2024 on Water Street, Fancy’s has quickly become a local favorite. More than just a deli, Fancy’s is a go-to lunch spot, a casual hangout, and one of the best Kelowna cocktail bars rolled into one. Whether you’re here for a midday bite or an evening drink, Fancy’s delivers on both food and atmosphere.

What to order & cost

Fancy’s is all about bold flavours, premium ingredients, and a touch of cheeky charm. While their menu rotates and evolves I am always a sucker for their “anti” sandwich, the El Morataza ($21). Made with local award winning JackKnife pizza dough, it is stuffed with mortadella, generous scoops of ricotta, honey and pistachio crumble – it is my all time favourite sandwich.

I also love to order one of their stiff cocktails! The Batanga served in a Mexican Cola glass bottle topped with salt rim is a great one for kicking off a Friday but you can’t go wrong with the butter tart old fashioned.

Typical wait time

Fancy’s is all about quality, which means the food is quick but never rushed. During lunch hours from 11 AM to 4 PM it can get busy, especially on weekends, making it one of the most popular Kelowna lunch spots. In the evenings on Friday and Saturday, Fancy’s stays open until 10 PM and the energy shifts into a cocktail lounge vibe, perfect if you’re looking for a relaxed night out in downtown Kelowna.

Most sandwiches take about 5 to 15 minutes to come out, depending on the crowd. There are no reservations, and seating is limited, so plan to arrive early if you want to dine in.Fancy’s also offers Kelowna catering for office lunches and private events, with options that go beyond sandwiches to include salads, dips, and other shareable favourites. At its core, Fancy’s is redefining what a deli can be in Kelowna. With European-style cold cuts, artisan cheeses, and some of the best cocktails in downtown Kelowna, it is the kind of spot where you’ll want to linger long after your plate is empty.

Rules and Things To Know

Honestly, nothing. Just a great brick and mortar spot that highlights some great local collabs – Jack Knife pizza dough and Alchemy Bread (Polenes’s bread).

Kelowna’s food scene and particularly new openings have been geared towards grab and go. The trend positions restaurants, like these mentioned, in a great position to be nearly recession proof. Affordability is essential for travellers and locals to keep coming back. As a local myself, I know I have been focusing my food endeavours on more affordable, local mom n’ pop style shops who not only benefit from the coverage but allow me to cover more locations with a limited budget. As a creator, much of my food posts come from where I like to eat and thus my own wallet.

The week I spent exploring Kelowna’s sandwich scene during my own lunch breaks was all funded by either myself or my co-workers. All opinions are my own and not everyone likes it as the case with Rocket Subs. But I still love their sandwiches. No one in the city has the perfect of ratio of bun to ingredients like they do!

So tell me, where is your favourite sandwich in the world and where should I eat next?
