I’m letting my secret out to readers early. There’s a reason I have been relatively silent. I’m sure you’ve noticed the little design changes I’ve made but I haven’t been writing and there’s a reason…and no I’m not pregnant again.
I am launching my own food tour company in 2020 featuring the best Kelowna restaurants.
I love a good food tour. One of my favourite ways to explore a city (new or an old favourite) is through its food scene. Food tours are one of the best ways to take out the guesswork for me as a visitor. All the research is done for me down to the route. Food tours have served me well in cities like Venice, Vancouver and London to name a few.
Talk about a new year’s resolution…
Now I am returning the favour by offering visitors and locals food tours in my favourite neighbourhoods of Kelowna, BC, Canada. Kelowna is the heart of the Okanagan wine region and is equipped with an international airport – so that means you all are invited!
I have been wanting to start a food tour in Kelowna for quite a few years and now is the time to strike.
My sister and I are behind Food Tours Kelowna and so far we’ve had some amazing feedback with local vendors asking to be involved in any capacity. I am already finding myself developing more tours than the two we want to begin 2020 with.
It’s an exciting time to be living in Kelowna. The North End, one of our food tour locations, is booming with new life. What was once an industrial area has now become a heaven for brewers, specialty shops and unique establishments many travellers overlook.
But this endeavour is all about collaboration and supporting local businesses.
No chains are involved and all partners are locally owned and operated. Food Tours Kelowna will focus on the ways in which our community is constantly supporting their neighbour or fellow brewer/wine maker/chef, etc. Our gelato maker is using local coffee roasters to make their affogato. Our brewers are using locally made wine to create flavourful hybrids. Our chefs are working closely with local farmers. Our community is founded upon collaboration and I am excited to become apart of it.
What’s a food tour?
Believe it or not this was a question we were asked numerous times by our lawyer and our bank manager. These guys need to get out more often!
We will be offering a walking food tour in areas of town that are lesser visited yet are home to some of the most innovative breweries, wineries and restaurants in town! All our tours will be an easy walk of up to 1 km and include a flight of beer or wine as well as up to 5 food stops that excited our taste buds.
As this winter arrives we are finalizing partners and taste testing all the menu items that we think you need to try during your visit in Kelowna.
How?
Aside from my sister I have had some help. My parents are willing participants as we taste test all our interested partners. My husband has been obliging to entertain the little one as I go out on weekends for “work”…I mean it is tasting food and meeting local chefs!
The Global Food Tourism Association membership included with my EZTix ticketing program has been essential as a newbie! The forums are packed with food tour operators around the world eager to answer any questions I have. I am also looking to local printers for our t-shirts, totes and other swag we want to provide each guest.
I was also excited to look to a local artist for our logo. Just a quick look through Ashleigh Green’s Instagram and I knew she was the perfect artist to work with. You may recognize her work from Vice & Virtue’s Giver Pale Ale or Okanagan Lifestyle’s artists’ series. Just recently Green collaborated with local celebrity & ex-bachelorette contestant Jillian Harris for a winter scene for her mantle.
