The Coolest Places to Stay in Kelowna – Budget Edition

One of the most asked questions we get here at Foodie Town, other than where to eat, is suggestions on where to stay in Kelowna. Is it better to stay in West Kelowna or downtown Kelowna? It’s tough to find anything budget friendly especially during peak season. Hotel prices near that of Vancouver in downtown Kelowna or the Penticton Lakeside Resort. Wineries offer some great options too but again you might be paying upwards of $400 – $1000 per night to stay on a vineyard. If you’re strapped for cash or maybe want to put your money towards experiences rather than where you’re sleeping this is a list of budget friendly stays in the Okanagan.

Hotel Zed Kelowna, Downtown Kelowna

This quirky hotel adorned with bright colours and 70s vibes has one of the best locations in Kelowna. Sitting across from City Park and just around the corner from Bernard Ave. you’re only steps away from popular dining options and the beach. It is one of most popular places to stay in downtown Kelowna on a budget.

Pros

Has a hot tub & sauna with disco room.
Close to everything.

Cons

As with any city there is some crime so keep your doors locked and car alarm on.

Serenity Stay in Lower Mission

This Airbnb is a self contained suite ideal for a couple looking to stay in a desirable location yet have all the amenities of a resort. Just steps away are the Manteo, Hotel Eldorado and Playa del Sol so there are great food, cafes and patio options. Located in the lower mission, which is not your typical downtown experience, it gives a more local living feel as a desirable location to live. You are also steps away from the beach – during a windy day you’ll find kite surfers here and on sunny days families flock and parking is a premium. These suites or even a single private room is a great way to stay in Kelowna on a budget. Plus the hosts will accommodate you with requests and guides of the neighbourhood.

Self contained suite with hot tub. Steps to the beach and restaurants. Nice design.
Local living experience with vacation perks.

Glamping on Acreage, Joe Rich Area

If you’re looking for a secluded stay near hiking and plenty of wilderness yet never very far from the city you might want to consider glamping in these yurt style tents. A great getaway idea for a group to rent both tents available. A glamping experience that is not exactly budget at $200 but considering your surroundings as well as the comfy beds, provided fire pits and really all you need is to bring food & hiking boots, you’ve got a camping experience that is uniquely Okanagan.

Pros

In nature, a unique stay within city limits. Views, outdoor bathrooms, fire pit included.

Cons

May be noisy from the highway being so close to the campsite.

Myra Canyon Ranch

This gorgeous property is tucked in the hills above the city. Gorgeous views of mountains, the Okanagan Lake and Kelowna from patios and horse trails. Astonishingly it is only 20 minutes away from downtown Kelowna but feels remote with hiking, rock climbing, cycling, and a luxury golf course not too far away. It’s a piece of the country in the mountains yet is still in the city! This is what I love about the Okanagan – city and country are blended together to create the ultimate #Okanaganlifestyle. It is definitely a great stay in Kelowna on budget.

Pros

20 minutes from town yet feels remove. Ideal for hikers or to getaway. Within 10 minutes of wineries, a distillery and more. 3 Viewing decks. BBQs on site.

Cons

Tiny Home Between Two Wineries – West Kelowna

This tiny home is located deep in west side wine trail of West Kelowna. Normally I don’t blend Kelowna and West Kelowna in posts but I am making an exception because of what this tiny home brings to the table. If you’re looking for the most bang for your buck it is West Kelowna. Why? More variety of wineries than Kelowna (commercial and boutique), premium views and lesser know restaurants without the Kelowna price tag.
You can find this property nestled between Kalala Winery and Ciao Bella winery and is within walking distance of Off the Grid winery – a personal favourite of mine. What a fantastic stay in Kelowna on a budget!

Pros

Walk to wineries. Fire pit included. Driving distance to other wineries, Paynter’s Market and restaurants nearby.

Cons

30 minute drive from Kelowna. If you decide to visit Kelowna you need to battle the bridge. Avoid crossing during rush hour!

AirBnb↗

At $180 with no cleaning fees it might be your best bet if a hotel is out of the question.

Lakeside Cabin on Iconic Westside Road

This little lifted cabin offers exclusive access to your own beach and packs a lot of style in a small space! 20 minutes North of Kelowna just off the winding Westside road popular with motorcyclists, it’s a hidden gem if you want to get away from it all.

Pros

Views, private beach on the beach. As close as you get!

Cons

20 minutes away from amenities and city. This side of the lake has the least amount of sun in summer. Sun sets behind this mountain.

AirBnb ↗

$350 per night isn’t exactly budget friendly but considering you pay upwards of $1000 per night to be this close to water in any other city or country…we’ll it might be worth it.

Honourable mentions

Hyatt Kelowna – About $200-$400 per night. Take a scenic walk (10 mins) down Bernard Ave which will lead you to downtown. You’ll pass many of the historic homes with plaques telling of their previous owners.

The Royal Kelowna – $190-$700 per night. Sometimes you can find a really nice place in this ideal vacation location that sleeps 4-6 people for $300 per night. Book early and avoid peak season when they charge double.

The Prestige Beach House – $115-$425 per night. Not exactly a beach house but next door to Hotel Zed so it is within steps of City Park. Has a good restaurant inside but is located next to the highway.

Ramada by Wyndham – $115-$300 per night. Located across from the Orchard Park Mall it is a perfectly fine hotel if you’re on a budget but want to do some shopping. On Saturdays you can walk to the Kelowna Farmers’ Market and Sandrine’s French Pastry & Chocolate.
