It’s been a while since I’ve written a Sunday Pranzo. What brought me back was the visions of cheese dancing in my head as I cut back on all things delicious and decadent for a while. What keeps me going are the memories of amazing cheese I sampled in Dublin at the Sheridans Cheesemonger shop.
If you know me, you know I LOVE cheese in all its ages, shapes and textures. I love Roquefort, Gouda, Brie, Camembert, Goat and especially the stinky, soft, creamy kinds that you spread on fragile crackers or fresh bread.
The act of creating a cheese laden cracker becomes an act or creativity as you choose to layer fruits, nuts, chutneys, herbs, meats, patés at your own discretion. Each bite becomes unique and paired with an endless selection of wines and beers from around the world the palate can experience something drastically different each time. This is why I love cheese.
This is also why I chose to make Sheridans a primary pit stop after a day of shopping in downtown Dublin.
As you enter under the green frame of the small unassuming shop you hear the angels sing the songs hungry men as if Saint Uguzon himself, patron saint of cheesemongers, had blessed this quaint boutique. From your left to your right there are so many different kinds of cheese and accoutrements your head will spin. Where is one to start?
My suggestion: Cashel Blue.
A classic and is made not far from Dublin in Cashel. This buttery and mild blue cheese is one of the most famous farmhouse options from Ireland. It would be delicious with a sliver of fruit (your choice) and a light white wine like Ehrenfelser or even a fruity spring summer ale.
If you’re not a fan of blue cheese then just ask the very helpful staff and they’ll gladly cut you a sample of their selection that are more suited to your palate.
After a lengthy morning or afternoon of shopping pick up some cheese and bread from Sheridans Cheesemonger then head over the Stephen’s Green for a picnic and the lively atmosphere often accompanied by music.
Is there space here to sit down and enjoy the cheese, or is it just a shop?
Hi Amelie,
It is just a shop but there are tastings you can do. Otherwise I recommend you bring it to the very nearby St Stephen’s Green Park. Lovely areas to sit and enjoy. It’s just around the corner from Sheridan’s in the Grafton street area.
Thanks for sharing your Cheesy Experience (PUN intended).
