Unique Things To Do In Vancouver’s Gastown

· ·

Gastown is an amazing spot where old Vancouver meets new Vancouver – you’ve got super cute cobblestone streets, those old-timey lamp posts, and buildings that have been there forever, making it perfect for some of the most unique stuff you can do in the city. I go to Vancouver’s Gastown for more than just that famous steam clock that everyone takes photos of and those busy patios where tourists hang out – this neighbourhood has so many hidden spots that most people don’t even know about! I gotta say it isn’t as easy as you’d expect to find all the secret gems, but that’s what makes exploring here so fun each and every time. Whether you’re trying one of those fancy craft cocktails in some tiny speakeasy that doesn’t even have a sign, or making your own jewelry in this adorable little boutique we discovered, Gastown gives you these one-of-a-kind experiences that are way better than the typical tourist traps. So if you’re looking to really experience Vancouver like a local, stick with me! In this guide, I’m gonna take you through all the unique things to do in Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood.

Where to stay in Vancouver’s Gastown

These are our favourite places to stay in the area. There’s no denying that Vancouver’s Gastown can be pricey, much like the rest of this iconic city. But these hotels have always provided quality experiences for us. As a female traveller safety is key and I suggest you be sure to read reviews before booking.

Pan Pacific Vancouver – In the video we stayed at the Pan Pacific and got a corporate rate. Stay during the shoulder seasons (Spring or Fall) to get better rates. This is luxury with a 12,000 ft spa. On the waterfront and is preferred location for cruisers with 3 restaurants & rooftop pool. $300-$750+ per night

Pinnacle Harbourfront – We stayed here during our visit to the Vancouver Christmas Market and enjoyed the lower prices and safe hotel. Can be a more affordable stay and is comfortable and safe but there is no hot tub and no spa.
$200-$500+ per night.

If you’re visiting Gastown for the first time, there are honestly a few must-see attractions that pretty much everyone checks off their list. I’ve been bringing friends and family here practically every time someone visits, and these five spots never disappoint. So a seasoned Gastown enthusiast like me should be able to guide you through the most epic attractions, right?

See the Gastown Steam Clock

I gotta say, this iconic clock is such a crowd-pleaser! It lets off steam and these awesome whistles every 15 minutes, and you wouldn’t believe how many people gather around for photos. We always time our coffee breaks to catch the steam show, and it’s been a highlight for us each and every time.

Stroll Along Water Street

The heart of Gastown is basically the most incredible stretch for people-watching and soaking in the vibes. We love wandering down this street with its historic buildings and endless boutique shops. When we’re feeling like treating ourselves, we’ll spend hours here just taking in the atmosphere and popping into whatever spots catch our eye.

Visit the Statue of Gassy Jack

This tribute to the neighborhood’s founder, Captain John “Gassy Jack” Deighton, has been in countless photos from our trips here. It isn’t as grand as you’d expect for such an important historical figure, but standing beside old Gassy Jack for a quick pic is something we never skip, no matter how many times we’ve been to the area.

Take a tour of Gastown – Food and or History

There’s so much to offer in the Vancouver neighbourhood and we believe food tours are a great way to not only learn about the food and culinary trends but also gain a history lesson at the same time. We enjoy Vancouver Foodie Tours but there are also historic walking tours that take you to all the most important stops mentioned above while informing about their importance shaping Vancouver’s history. If you’re looking to completely get out of the touristy areas, consider checking out Richmond’s delicious food experiences! You can also try and check off some must-eats while in Vancouver at the Granville Island Market!

Unique things to do in Vancouver’s gastown District

If you’re looking to go beyond Gastown’s typical tourist spots, here are five unique experiences that will make your visit extra special:

Sip Cocktails at Arcana Speakeasy

Tucked away behind an unassuming neon sign that reads “Pet Psychic”, this mystical speakeasy serves up creative cocktails inspired by tarot and alchemy. The ambiance is intimate and enchanting—perfect for a hidden night out. As you see in the video, I ordered the Wheel of Fortune cocktail where I was able to spin the wheel 2 times to determine what kind of drink I would have that evening. My friend got the Cthulhu cocktail served in a mug shaped like the fictional horror character and smoke from dry ice pours out from the top. It was such a good time!

Shayelilly Jewelry in Vancouver's Gastown

Design Your Own Jewelry at Shayelily

Get hands-on with a one-of-a-kind experience at this charming boutique, where you can craft a custom piece of jewelry to take home as a keepsake. I loved how many colours, trinkets, themes you could choose from in their gorgeous shop. It made for a memorable day with my bestie, making something special to commemorate another trip to Vancouver’s Gastown. Definitely something unique to do in Vancouver.

Eat at a trendy restaurant

Gastown is know for its long running list of restaurants. In the video we dined at DiBeppe Italian restaurant and there are plenty more to try like L’Abbatoir and Pidgin as the neighbourhood’s most popular and famed dining spots. For something more fun and lighthearted we suggest Greta, an arcade, kitchen and bar rolled into one.

Experience a Paranormal Tour

With its rich history and eerie past, Gastown is the perfect place for a ghost tour. Join a walking tour to hear chilling stories of the district’s haunted sites and unsolved mysteries. I’ve joining their tours in Vancouver and Victoria and am never disappointed!

Enjoy an Underground Comedy or Drag Show

Some of Gastown’s coolest venues, like The Portside Pub or Guilt & Co., host incredible live performances, from stand-up comedy, karaoke to lively drag shows. This is party in Gastown!

These offbeat experiences will give you a whole new perspective on one of Vancouver’s most historic neighbourhoods!
