How to start a cookbook club: The Vancouver Cookbook Club
In a world where connections can often feel elusive, the Vancouver Cookbook Club has emerged as a beacon of community and culinary creativity. Founded by Josh Mendoza and his wife Cynthia, this unique gathering not only celebrates food but also fosters relationships among its members, creating a warm and inclusive environment for all. One of the best ways to meet people in Vancouver, Josh and Cynthia are providing events to attend to create genuine friendships around common interests. The Journey to Vancouver
Josh Mendoza’s journey to Vancouver is one of resilience and a quest for belonging. Originally from Winnipeg, Josh moved to Vancouver in 2017 after a brief stint in Whistler left him feeling isolated.
“I thought I was going to live my best life here in the West Coast, but then I was so wrong,” Josh reflects on his initial experience with loneliness in the bustling city.
He quickly realized that making friends in Vancouver was a challenge, as many newcomers were also searching for connection. This shared experience of loneliness among new residents sparked the idea for the Vancouver Cookbook Club, a place where people could come together, share their culinary talents, and build community
The Birth of the Vancouver Cookbook Club
Josh and Cynthia were inspired to start the Vancouver Cookbook Club after witnessing the popularity of similar clubs in New York.
“We love hosting, and we both came from a background of food,” shares Josh, highlighting their passion for culinary arts and community-building.
The club began in January of this year with a small gathering of friends from their church, and it quickly grew in popularity. After posting their experience on social media, they were inundated with requests to join. What began as a quarterly event has now evolved into a monthly celebration of food and friendship.

Engaging Events and Unique Themes
The Vancouver Cookbook Club hosts a variety of themed events that encourage creativity and sharing. One notable event was the recent cookie exchange, where participants were encouraged to bring at least 36 cookies, with some for sampling and others for swapping. Over 50 people participated, showcasing the growing interest in the club. Josh explained that they carefully select cookbooks for each event, ensuring the recipes are approachable and shareable, which enhances the overall experience. For example, during a farm-to-table themed event, one participant wowed everyone with a beautifully presented green garden hummus, demonstrating the heart and soul that members pour into their dishes.

Building Community Beyond the Kitchen
What sets the Vancouver Cookbook Club apart is the sense of community that extends beyond the kitchen. Josh shared a touching moment when he observed regular participants forming friendships outside of the club. “They went for a kayaking trip together, showcasing the bonds formed through our events,” he said. This sense of belonging is exactly what Josh was searching for when he first moved to Vancouver, and he feels a deep sense of fulfillment in bridging that gap for others.

The Venue Scouting Process
Finding the right venue to host these culinary gatherings is crucial for the club’s success. Josh emphasized the importance of collaborating with spaces that offer amenities like ovens or stoves, which allow participants to heat their dishes. Additionally, they seek venues that are willing to work with them without charging a rental fee, fostering a collaborative spirit that benefits both the club and the venues involved.
The Vancouver Cookbook Club is more than just a cooking group; it is a thriving community that brings people together through the shared love of food. Josh and Cynthia’s innovative approach to building connections through culinary creativity has transformed their initial loneliness into a network of friendships and support. As more people discover the joy of cooking and community within this club, it’s clear that the Vancouver Cookbook Club will continue to grow and inspire others to connect through food.
