The Wanderlist Series has been opening my eyes to how many places I really want to go. This month I turn my focus towards Portugal. Frankly, I tend to leave my travel plans up to fate or majority votes. It has worked for me so far. But when I ask myself where do I really want to go I have been drawing a blank as of late. I become completely indecisive.

My attention has recently been drawn to Portugal. “It’s like Spain but cheaper,” something I’ve heard travellers say. So I figured why not dive a little deeper into this idea that Portugal is an affordable getaway with great food, culture and beaches?

 

The findings have made a strong case for a potential destination for my 30th birthday!

Downtown Porto you can have a penthouse overlooking the old city with a walkout balcony for $119 CAD per night! This bright and charming apartment sleeps 3 guests with 2 beds and 1 bedroom. Why is Porto such a special city? The colourful architecture, historic streets and wine culture alone are compelling reasons to go but for photographers looking to get the iconic shots along the Douro River won’t be able to resist.

Prefer a more rural setting for 2? This charming cottage style property is a lovely setting for a getaway. A village atmosphere, Sintra is actually a popular tourist destination and is Portugal’s capital of Romanticism with its own Moorish castle. This small cottage below is only $145 CAD per night and walking distance to almost everything Sintra has to offer.

 

But if Lisbon is more your style I’ve found an amazing $84 CAD per night renovated duplex in a more local area yet near the tourist attractions. Enough space for 4 people and surrounded by bars and restaurants populated by locals this is a real bargain for any group of friends looking for an affordable getaway!

I love Vinho Verde – it is a cheap Portuguese wine sold here in Canada for about $10 a bottle! To visit the Vinho Verde region would make a great story. So many people don’t really know about this affordable yet delicious wine!
