During the first morning in Whistler I woke up to hot green tea brewed in my Westin Whistler Resort & Spa one bedroom suite kitchenette equipped with fridge, microwave, fridge and freezer as well as a dishwasher and stove. Sitting on my private patio nestled within tailored gardens made the morning even more peaceful as I sat in the sun taking in the snow capped mountains and a few early morning golfers practicing their drive at the range. The Westin Whistler Resort & Spa is a massive property with all the charm of a rustic yet elegant cabin with accents of pine and leather in warm golden tones making you want to turn on your fireplace and have frost grace the windows. The Westin Whistler is the only hotel in Whistler that is an all-suite luxury hotel and spa giving visitors the convenience of apartment-like rooms with a dinning area, fireplaces and kitchens making it a great choice for families.
But Whistler is something different to everyone. It can be a place of adventure for thrill seekers, of relaxation, of gourmet food and wine, of nature, for yogis, equipped for shoppers, a kid friendly adventure or a year round snow playground all within minutes of the village centre.
But Whistler is the place to get back to nature without leaving the comforts of a small well established city (I was never much of a camper but then again I think it was the people I camped with). The village square contains a grocery store ideal for saving money while staying a week in the Westin suites testing your cooking and baking skills all within the comforts of your hotel room.
But this being a trip to celebrate my mom’s birthday and pay her back for my amazing birthday she helped plan we (my dad, sister, boyfriend and I) allowed her to determine what kind of Whistler she wanted to experience. Not unexpectedly she wanted her Whistler to be relaxing.
Luckily, the Westin Resort & Spa has the ideal amenities to make the ultimate luxury zen vacation within the iconic wilderness of British Columbia. Needless to say a spa day was in order. The spa amenities cater to those looking to make an entrance at an evening dinner, a hard worker/player to ease his/her muscles, to help transcend by way of hot rock massage, or treat your skin to a plethora of treatments performed by world class spa technicians (literally, they all have different accents and not originally from BC).
After a relaxing day at the spa and SPF lathered skin we were on the hunt for bathing suits and having previously worked at L’Occitane I had to stop in and load up on some of my favourite products. Whistler offers shopping so that you can return home looking like a true Vancouverite which the Québécois writer Lorena Gale , after moving from Montreal to Vancouver, likened their fashion sense to a person who had just stepped out of a kayak – sporty, ready to run from a charge of a deer or get soaked by the spray of a whale (I exaggerate). But you can also shop for more practical clothes suitable for beaches or even casual chic dresses without even leaving the Westin Resort as there is a connected shopping centre where you can also rent bicycles. Be sure to check out the art gallery on premise as well!
Finding bathing suits we headed back to the Westin to relax by the pool with a birthday drink. However, it seemed like everyone else staying there had a similar idea in the scorching heat of 35˚Celsius (95˚Fahrenheit) and poolside loungers were hard to come by. Luckily there were loungers and tables in the Aubergine restaurant and outdoor bar area where we were served a light lunch and a few ice cold patio sippers. If you were more energetic than our group I would recommend making good use of the full service concierge who will book any and all activities at your request giving you more time to explore your Whistler.
What’s your Whistler?
Next time it’ll be an adventure within nature. But rest assured the next day was a Whistler for foodies!
